J'ACCUSE: The ‘Jalan Riong’ Affair
“Siaran ‘Jalan Riong’ tergendala … kerana orang yang tidak bersalah akan diheret ke mahkamah tidak lama lagi….”
This blog will be closed down until further notice.
Not because all good things must come to an end. Not because of illness and a broken heart. Not because this area’s streamyx seems to be perpetually in cyber-ICU.
It stops here because an innocent man, ‘Anwar’, has been made a scapegoat.
He will mostly likely go to jail due to the disgusting and preposterous state of affairs caused by the *real* Jalan Riong. Stopping this blog is our way of protesting this injustice.
We knew and liked Screenshots. Thus, we willingly took up arms in support Screenshots when it came under vile and despicable fire from Jalan Riong.
However, events of late have moved the compass elsewhere.
An unknown hospital lab technician - ‘Anwar’ – is now under attack from the government. What are bloggers going to do about this?
Should we now stand aside and allow the law to take its course because:-
(a) We didn’t agree with what ‘Anwar’ said;
(b) We don’t know who this ‘Anwar’ person is; and/or
(c) We don’t care about ‘Anwar’ because he’s not important and not a public figure.
Or can we once again rise to the occasion and by virtue of defending ‘Anwar’, defend our right to freedom of expression?

“…(L)a verite est en marche et rien ne l'arretera” (Truth is on the march and nothing can stop it) [Emile Zola, “J’accuse” in L'Aurore, 13 January 1898]
This is not the Dreyfuss Affair. We are not anywhere as eloquent as Emile Zola. But the following is a proposition:-
A small battle was won when it came to Screenshots. But the war against bloggers and freedom of expression still looms. The venue: Cyberspace. Number of casualties to date: One (‘Anwar’).
In the first place, there are too few freedoms left in Malaysia when it comes to writing, publishing and expression. We have all but lost the war on press freedom. We will never see the demise of the Printing Presses and Publications Act unless we have a change of government. So we are now left with this sad miniscule slice of ‘liberated’ zone which is under constant attacks from every conceivable force.
If the prosecution continues, and god forbids, succeeds in the case of ‘Anwar’, what we have before us is a precedent with enormous repercussions.
We would then have to fear what we say, how we say it and when we say it. With each stroke of the keyboard, we tremble in anticipation of the worst-case scenario. Everytime we push the ‘Send’ or ‘Submit’ button, we wonder if we had covered all bases.
This will spell the end of freedom of expression on the internet.
This will be the end to our right to privacy.
J’accuse Jalan Riong of shamelessly using its resources to launch a personal campaign to in order to vilify Screenshots.
J’accuse Jalan Riong of obscuring multiple truths in order to incite an sizeable and influential community to react adversely towards Screenshots.
J’accuse Jalan Riong of not having the common courtesy and decency of extending a public apology to Screenshots for the pain and suffering it has caused.
J’accuse Jalan Riong of complicity in finding a scapegoat and allowing the persecution of ‘Anwar’ to continue in order to cover their tracks and save ‘face’.
Finally, J’accuse Jalan Riong of attempting to dismantle a fundamental guarantee under the MSC Bill of Guarantees and to erode internet users’ freedom of expression, thought and opinion.
Malaysian Lampoon: JalanRiong.blogspot.com has been a satire in support of freedom of expression on the internet. We say, the only exception to this rule is where there are violence, threats of physical harm, death threats etc.
Each one of us can have our own list of issues or words that we disallow into our own sites. Moderated sites are common and there is a code of honour among bloggers. Some may say this, and others say that; whoever or whatever we dislike or disagree may face the wrath of the ‘delete’ button – this is our prerogative.
But we do not and cannot allow the government-of-the-day to regulate and dictate to us what to do and what to censor.
This choice is ours alone. This is what’s called freedom of expression.
Now the choice is yours.
Defend ‘Anwar’.
Defend freedom of expression and our privacy.
And defend at all costs.
Because ‘Anwar’s’ freedom is ours too.

We must defend Anwar! Freedom rules and long live bloggers!
Meanwhile, it was said Jeff Ooi is the one who happily handed Anwar's login details over to the authority, what do you guys say about this ... traitor to the free world?
Please note that Jeff Ooi didn’t deny he is the provider of Anwar’s internet trail but instead, he claimed that with new knowledge in the field of digital forensics, NO ONE can be assured that his/her ditial footprint CANNOT be traced - even the cleverest hackers/crackers can be traced BUT Mr. X from Bolehtalk (http://bolehtalk.blogspot.com) commented that Jeff Ooi uttered rubiish and his statement is WRONG! He said he can confirm no matter how advanced is digital forensics, one still need to trace from point A and in this case, point A is Screenshots or Jeff Ooi!
Excerpt from Bolehtalk/Screenshots: -
JanK and a few more posted similar postings @ Screenshots (almost all are deleted except the below) asking Jeff Ooi: -
'I have posted at least two messages to you jeff if you had allowed investigations to Anwar in any way. But I have not heard from you.
I think its shoddy for the govt to raise a ruckus over it.
So I have decided this to be my last posting to Screenshots in protest."
After much threat of boycotting, JEFF OOI finally replied: "To Jank who posted at 10:18pm October 16 and others who posted on similar topic:
( 1 ) I must repeat that I do not and will not condone what 'Anwar' has done to smear the reputation of this blog as a responsible weblog with good intention; ( 2 ) I do not want to be drawn into any act or making any statements that may be deemed prejudicial to or obstructing the authorities' investigations into the'Anwar' case; ( 3 ) I do not want to be drawn into any act or making any statements that may later be used to incriminate me; ( 4 ) with new knowledge in the field of digital forensics, NO ONE can be assured that his/her ditial footprint CANNOT be traced - even the cleverest hackers/crackers can be traced, caught and duely punished; ( 5 ) In upholding the Malaysian cyberlaw which applies to all online content, I firmly believe that all relevant government agencies have the means and expertise to trace and nab anyone who flouts the law, hence everyone should be made aware of this reality and be law-compliant even in the cyber space.
October 6, I have stated my stand on the relevant critical information about commenter 'Anwar', in which I have mentioned the trails that 'Anwar' has left behind on this blog and what is already in the public domain. The authorities have the means and capabilities to conduct their investigations relevant to their expert domain. This is the URL in which I have made my stand in a transparent manner'
Mr X: On (4) ... NO ONE can be assured that his/her ditial footprint CANNOT be traced ... WRONG! I can confirm that no matter how advanced is digital forensics, you still need to trace from point A and in this case, point A is Screenshots or Jeff Ooi!
Here is a precedence by Malaysiakini ie. No ID Revealing our Contributors even Bukit Aman Raided them and took away their computers ... Bravo!
Comment by one KTemoc at http://bolehtalk.blogspot.com/ : -
Remember last year when Malaysiakini had the same problem. It refused to give up the ID of a letter writer by name of, I think it was "Petra"?
Let's see what will now happen. Will ths Police just go through the motion of recording a statement from 'Anwar' and then closing the case, or will it actually prosecute the poor man?
I am inclined to believe the former as the latter would just fling more mud on those gungho and rash UMNO personalities who had yelled for Screenshots blood.
Dear Allegations: You seem just as quick as the real Jln Riong in blaming Jeff for various things before doing your homework.
Read this: http://www3.malaysiakini.com/news/30853
OK?
I appeal to the authorities to drop the case against 'Anwar'. We Malaysians have more important tasks ahead. Hounding a web-poster on a questionable issue expends unnecessary resources and belittles our democracy. Let this holy month guide us to our higher selves, and leave our vengeful shadow behind.
fully agree with KTemoc.
hey i hope this blog will not close down for good! temporary? temporary until when? until the 'anwar' issue is over? i mean when the authorities decide nothing to do with anwar?

Thanks Sashi.
As much as I like Malaysiakini but judging from what transpired of late, I begin to doubt their integrity as well. I am a straight talker, so let me put it bluntly ... I suspect Malaysiakini is now (probably got into it very reluntantly) part of the SCAM!
Why? While I already got some clue on the published news (stay tuned for the truth), Malaysiakini of late published some suspicious stuffs in support of Jeff Ooi whom they regard as a comrade (maybe due to the fact that most of the players in Malaysiakini used to attend schools in the Aussieland?). For example, refer Refer Malaysiakini's column 'Leave 'Screenshots' and its owner alone' by Lee Ban Chen (http://malaysiakini.com/columns/30832), among others, the writer said 'Ooi had deleted the offensive comparison after he read it, and banned Anwar from further postings for failing to abide by guidelines and administrative warnings'. I could confirm this statement is factually WRONG! because Jeff Ooi DIDN'T delete the posting and as a matter of fact, he even further commented on it! (This is the exactly reason why I say he is a party to the 'offensive' comment).
Another thing is no one knows if Jeff Ooi actually banned him on the 1st (Berita Harian published the incident on the 2nd) as he claimed, this is just a matter of his words against his own (in)action ... Please note that this Anwar has posted many comments including at least one plagiarized from this blog before, so I wonder if Jeff Ooi has determined this Anwar as offensive, why didn't he ban him any earlier and why didn't he delete his comment?
Anyway, Jeff Ooi has long been 'left alone' after he got his Godfather to speak up and the only victim left is called Anwar, Jeff Ooi only need your donation but Anwar needs you to speak up ... or he is going to jail!

See, that's why we need free speech. To separate wheat from chaffe and recognise personal attacks (such as those from Jalan Riong, among others).
But back here:
It's unreasonable to say that Jeff is "party to the 'offensive' comment" when it was clear that he had chided the person responsible for it.
Also, Allegation, your slur on mkini is based on pure speculation and your reasoning faulty. mkini ain't perfect, but you obviously don't know Steven Gan to say that the company he helped found is part of the 'scam'.
Lastly, to some people their word is a matter of pride and right. I believe Jeff is a person of his word, even if I disagree with some of his actions.
There's only one thing that I agree with you on: i.e. I support 'Anwar''s right of say. So, does that mean I'm in cohorts with you? ;-p
PS Am in mourning now over the loss of my daily soap on the lifestyle of the rich and powerful at Jalan Riong. Thanks for the voyeuristic opp.
I am posting this open Appeal from Mr X of Bolehtalk in support of Anwar …
SPARE ANWAR BEHIND THE BARS ...
An open appeal to Pak Lah: Please don't jail Anwar because not only imprisonment will ruin his life (I assumed he has no criminal records, otherwise, it's a different story), punishment of this magnitude is also detrimental to the society and the nation ie. it will invite criticism and possible backlash from the international communities and at the same time, affect the confidence as well as restrain the creativity of rakyat. Politically speaking, a lose-lose strategy.

I kinda agree that defending 'anwar' will set as precedence to the rest of bloggers. And some have also made a point, if i'm not mistaken 'khairy' questioned, would it made any dif if 'anwar' was a poster from other country... ironic isn't it?
Besides, my sixth sense (ok, my rationale) says that they have no case with 'anwar'. Others have said far more crude and offensive words before, especially on PAS... so why now? why 'anwar'?
Let 'anwar' go. He has posted the apology... If Noh could offer Jeff to let him off hook with an apology, why can't that apply to 'anwar'?
Eversince I was banned from Screenshots, Malaysiakini never publish a single letter I sent to them.
Even as I write, I have sent them couple of appeal letters in an effort to save poor Anwar from being jailed, they refuse to publidh the letter as usual ... I wonder what's the rationale?

I'm taking the repeated commented. Dislike repetitiveness.
Based on the positive input I received this morning, it looks like Anwar will remain a free man ... sound likes music to your ear? Stay tuned for more ...
